This project was developed and completed in June 2019 as part of the Special Topics in Design: Global Sustainable Design module for a course in Digital Media Design BA.
*This work was featured in a Global Sustainable Design exhibition in the ArtLab of Bradshaw Library from 19 August 2019 to 05 September 2019*
The Brief: Using a study abroad trip to Copenhagen Denmark, Malmö Sweden, and London UK as a basis, students were to define a sustainability problem in the US locally, state-wide, or nationally and propose a design solution. We were to think of a design solution we encountered internationally that could be altered and applied to solve a real problem in the US. The goal was to translate a European solution to be more palatable for a US consumer or audience. We needed to consider what cultural, societal and personal differences situate the original solution that would or would not apply in the US. We were to examine not just the physicality of the design solution (the implementation and media) but also examine and reflect upon the culture and society that enable the original solution’s success.
The Response: I researched the Ultra Low Emission Zone scheme implemented by Transport for London (TfL) and made necessary alterations for a similar scheme to be introduced in Miami, Florida, US. Along with designing a 21 page document of background research, survey interviews, and design drafts, I created a mini model of a junction in Miami that showcases a boundary for road pricing, the designed signage, and a 'Park N Ride' car park for older, non-compliant vehicles.
